Invite Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest

Sign-Up Deadline: October 31, 2007

Register your school to participate in Poetry Out Loud!   Administered by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the New York State Alliance for Arts Education (NYSAAE) and sponsored by Time Warner Cable, Poetry Out Loud provides a new and exciting channel for learning in high school English and Theater classrooms by inviting the dynamic aspects of classic world literature and charismatic public speaking into English and theater classes. Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation to encourage high school students to read a wide range of literature, building an understanding of texts and the world around them. Poetry Out Loud also helps students to master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.  Moreover, Poetry Out Loud satisfies NCTE English Language Arts Standards.

Upon registration, teachers will receive dynamic teaching tools that will invoke students’ excitement about literature and poetry recitation, including sample lesson plans, audio CDs of poets reciting their own famous works, publicity materials for school competitions, and a DVD of winning student performances from the 2007 Poetry Out Loud National Finals.

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that begins in the classroom. Through January 16th, classroom- and school-level competitions will take place across the state. The winners from school-level competitions will advance to regional competitions.  From there, winners will go on to compete at the New York State finals, to be held in Albany, NY on March 13th (snow date March 14th).

The state-level winner will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with a chaperone to Washington, DC to participate in the National Finals in late April 2008.  The winner will also receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books for his or her school library.  A runner-up will receive $100, with $200 for his or her school library.

If you would like to bring Poetry Out Loud to your high school, please sign up by October 31, 2007.  Learn more about Poetry Out Loud  by visiting www.nysaae.org/appinfo.htm or contact Lainy Slyder at lainy@nysaae.org for further information.

I hope that all of your school years are off to a good start!  I wanted to give you all a heads up on a few things regarding COSER 517 Model Schools for Fall 2007.

FILM FESTIVAL: ( CLICK HERE FOR FLYER )
Last year, BOCES hosted a student film festival for students in three component school districts.  This year, we’re encouraging districts who are interested in incorporating video technology into their curriculum to participate in the ROD SERLING film festival.  It’s a statewide program for stuents k-12. Teachers who may be interested?  Multimedia teachers, video production teachers, art teachers, content area teachers who are interested in student videos.

Albany Institute of History & Art - DL programs

It is once again time to think about planning educational, fun experiences for your students. For the 2007-08 school year, the Albany Institute of History & Art has many videoconferencing lessons, which are presented in real time, by a New York State Certified teacher, allowing students to learn, question and feel as though they are in the same room as our teacher. I have attached a PDF of all the available lessons for 2007 - 08.

Please feel free to share this information with colleagues in your district and beyond. I am available during the week to speak with you and answer any questions or to schedule a program for your students.

I am looking forward to working with each of you and your students.

Sincerely,
Tracy Grosner

New Organization and Upcoming Event: Western Southern Tier Council for the Social Studies

New Organization and Upcoming Event: Western Southern Tier Council for the Social Studies

Headed by the folks at our local Teaching American History grant in Jamestown, a new chapter of the New York State Council for the Social Studies has been formed.  Named the Western Southern Tier Council for the Social Studies, the organization covers counties from Chautauqua in the west to Tompkins in the east.

Because of geography, a lot of things will be done on line, which will provide some great opportunities for teachers across a wider region to communicate with each other.  The site is not complete yet, but if it’s anything like the Teaching American History site, it will be very well done.

The first conference is scheduled for this fall in Ellicottville on Friday and Saturday morning, November 9 & 10.  Some very good events and speakers are planned.

To access the site and the conference flyer, go to the site here:

For all you social studies teaches who don’t have the local Teaching American History site bookmarked, here’s your chance:
